Outdoor Fun

Ballenger Creek Park features a 7-mile hiking trail, picnic areas, playgrounds, ball fields, grilling areas, and volleyball courts.

Cunningham Falls State Park is divided into 2 areas of the Catoctin Mountains; the William Houck area contains a lake and the Cunningham Falls, a 78-foot waterfall that is the largest in Maryland, and camping facilities. The Manor area also has camping and an aviary. Both areas are popular for swimming, hunting, fishing, boating, and picnicking.

The Catoctin Wildlife Preserve and Zoo houses over 319 species of animals (plus amphibians and fish) from many different continents for their continued preservation. Animals include lions, tigers, wolves, alligators, lemurs, sun bears, parrots, anaconda, dingos, and many more.

Visitors can also take a driving tour of the last 3 remaining covered bridges in Maryland: The Roddy Road, Loys Station, and Utica Mills were all built around the mid-1800s and feature different truss systems (what holds up a bridge) and are not only interesting architecturally, but provide scenic backdrops for a picnic or fishing trip.

The Original Playhouse and Exploratorium encourages hands-on and creative learning through play, especially for the age ranges of 3-8 years old. Through colorful, sensory-engaging toys and equipment, kids can learn and grow socially.
